Hudson's Bay Company

The Hudson's Bay Company, or HBC, was born a super long time ago, in 1670! It was given a special paper by a king that let it trade all over a huge area of land called Rupert's Land. This land was mostly around the giant Hudson Bay, which is like a huge inland sea in Canada. Think of it like a giant playground that HBC got to explore and trade in first!

For many years, HBC was all about trading for animal furs. People would hunt animals like beavers, and HBC would trade them things they needed. They built forts and trading posts all over the place. It was like having a giant store that was also a fort! They were so important that they were like the government for a long time, making rules and helping people.

Guess what? HBC didn't just stay a fur trading company! It grew and grew and started opening stores that you might know, like The Bay! They also owned other stores like Zellers and even some stores in other countries. It's like a company that started with trading beaver hats and ended up selling you clothes and toys!

HBC has been around for over 350 years, which is older than your grandparents' grandparents! It was bought and sold a few times, and it changed what it did. It used to be in charge of lots of land, but then it focused on its stores. Even though it's changing now, it's amazing to think about how much this one company has seen and done!
