The Holy League of 1571

The Holy League was like a special club for powerful Catholic countries in Europe. Think of them as the 'good guys' of the sea! Pope Pius V, a very important leader, helped bring them together.

The main members were Spain and some Italian places. They all agreed to work together to stop another big power, the Ottoman Empire, from controlling the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It was a big plan to keep the seas safe for everyone!

The Ottoman Empire was becoming super strong and was taking over lots of important sea routes. This made it hard for other countries to travel and trade. The Holy League wanted to push back and make sure the sea lanes stayed open.
