Harambe the Gorilla

Harambe was a super strong western lowland gorilla who lived at the Cincinnati Zoo. He was born on May 27, 1999, and was a big, handsome gorilla. Gorillas like Harambe are known for being very intelligent and having families they care about. He was a special part of the zoo and many people loved seeing him!

One day, a little boy visiting the zoo accidentally climbed into Harambe's special home. Harambe came over to see the boy. Because Harambe was so big and strong, the zookeepers got worried about the boy's safety. They made a very hard choice to protect the child.

What happened to Harambe became a big news story all around the world! People talked a lot about what happened and how the zoo made their decision. It made many people think about how important it is to keep animals and people safe when they are near each other.
