Gulf of California

Imagine a giant, wiggly bathtub for the Pacific Ocean! That's kind of like the Gulf of California. It's a special part of the ocean that sits between a long, skinny piece of land called the Baja California peninsula and the main part of Mexico.

It's so big, it has a coastline that's as long as walking across the United States twice! This amazing place is also called the Sea of Cortez, like a secret nickname.

This sea is like a super-duper busy city for sea creatures! Scientists think there are more than 5,000 different kinds of tiny, tiny animals living there. That's more than all the kids in your whole school, and then some!

It's one of the most diverse places on Earth, meaning lots and lots of different kinds of animals and plants call it home. It's like a giant underwater playground with tons of friends.

Big rivers, like the Colorado River, flow into the Gulf of California, bringing fresh water and important stuff from the land. These rivers are like highways for water, carrying it all the way to the sea. The gulf is also super deep in some places, deeper than a skyscraper is tall! This is because of amazing underground movements, like giant puzzle pieces shifting beneath the ocean floor.

Because the Gulf of California is so special and full of life, some parts of it are protected by a special group called UNESCO. This means it's a World Heritage Site, like a super important treasure that everyone needs to help take care of. It's a reminder of how amazing our planet is and why we need to keep its special places healthy for all the amazing creatures that live there.
