What's a Groundhog?

Groundhogs are fuzzy, furry critters that are also called woodchucks! They are a type of rodent, which means they have sharp front teeth for nibbling. Imagine a chunky squirrel, but bigger!

They are excellent diggers and spend a lot of time underground in their cozy burrows. These animals are mostly found in North America, living in grassy fields and forests across the eastern United States, Canada, and even Alaska. They are pretty good at taking care of themselves!

Digging Superstars!

Groundhogs are amazing diggers! They use their strong claws and teeth to make big underground homes called burrows. These burrows can have many rooms and tunnels, like a secret underground house!

They dig these homes to stay safe from other animals and to keep warm in the winter. Some burrows can be as long as a school bus! They are also super smart and can even whistle to warn their friends if danger is near.

They are very good at working together to dig.

What's for Dinner?

Groundhogs are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. Their favorite foods include yummy grasses, clover, and sometimes even tasty fruits and vegetables from gardens. They love to munch on fresh greens and can often be seen nibbling away in fields.

They need to eat a lot to store up energy, especially before they go to sleep for the winter. They are very careful eaters and know what plants are good for them.

Groundhog Day Fun!

You might have heard of groundhogs because of Groundhog Day, a special holiday on February 2nd. The story goes that if a groundhog sees its shadow when it comes out of its burrow, winter will last six more weeks! If it doesn't see its shadow, spring will come early.

It's a fun tradition, even though scientists don't really think groundhogs can predict the weather that well. They are mostly just waking up from a long nap!
