Grand Coulee Dam

The Grand Coulee Dam is like a super-duper strong wall made of concrete, built across a big river called the Columbia River. It's so tall, it's like stacking up 50 school buses on top of each other! This giant wall helps make electricity and gives water to farms so they can grow yummy food. It’s one of the biggest dams in the whole United States!

Building this giant dam was a HUGE project that took many years, starting way back in 1933. People had to decide if they wanted a tall dam or a shorter one. They chose to build a really tall one, which was a great idea! President Franklin Delano Roosevelt even visited to see the work. It was finally finished in 1942, and water started flowing over the top!

This dam has amazing superpowers! It makes tons of electricity, enough to power many homes and factories. It also stores a giant lake of water called Franklin Delano Roosevelt Lake. This water is used to water farms in a big area, helping grow lots of crops. It’s like a giant water sprinkler for the land!

The giant lake behind the dam is named after President Roosevelt. Making this lake meant some people and their homes had to move. Also, the dam is so big that fish like salmon can't swim past it to reach their old homes. This is a sad part of the dam's story, and it shows how big projects can affect nature.
