Ganges Shark

Have you ever seen a shark? Usually, we think of them in the big, salty ocean. But the Ganges shark is special because it lives in rivers! It calls the muddy waters of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers in India and Bangladesh its home. It's a bit shy and very rare, making it a bit of a mystery. It's not as big as some ocean sharks, but it's still a powerful swimmer in its watery world.

This shark is a carnivore, which means it loves to eat meat! Its diet includes fish that swim in the same rivers. It also munches on other small creatures it can find in the murky water. Because it lives in rivers, it has to be good at finding food in places where it's hard to see. It uses its senses to find tasty snacks like fish and crustaceans to keep its energy up for swimming.

The Ganges shark isn't the biggest shark you can imagine. It can grow to be about as long as a small car, maybe around 6 feet (1.8 meters) long. That's taller than many grown-ups! It's not super heavy, but it's strong enough to be a top predator in its river home. Think of it as a sleek, fast swimmer that can navigate through the water with ease.

Sadly, the Ganges shark is in trouble. It's called 'critically endangered,' which means there aren't many left. Pollution in the rivers and too many boats can make it hard for them to survive. Scientists are working hard to learn more about them and protect their homes so these amazing river sharks don't disappear forever. We need to keep their rivers clean and safe!
