Gabby Giffords

Gabby Giffords is a super strong woman who used to work in the U.S. Congress, which is like a big meeting place where important decisions are made for the whole country. She represented a place called Arizona.

Imagine being a voice for lots of people! Gabby was born on June 8, 1970, and grew up in a sunny city called Tucson, Arizona. She loved learning and went to college to become smart and ready to help her community.

Before becoming a leader in the big Congress, Gabby worked in her family's business, which sold tires! Then, she became a leader in Arizona's own government, first in the House and then the Senate. It's like moving up the ladder in a big game! In 2007, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She was the third woman from Arizona to ever do that – pretty cool!

One day, while talking to people who lived in her district, something very sad and scary happened. Gabby was shot. It was a very serious injury, and she had to work incredibly hard to get better. But Gabby is a fighter! She learned to walk, talk, and read again. She even went back to the Congress building to say goodbye to her friends there, and everyone gave her a big, proud clap!

After her time in Congress, Gabby decided to use her experiences to help make things safer for everyone. She and her husband, who is also a very famous astronaut named Mark Kelly, started an organization. This group works to help prevent people from getting hurt by gun violence.
