Key Facts
When France Came to Town!
A long, long time ago, France decided to take over a country called Algeria. This started in 1830 when French soldiers landed in Algiers, the capital city. It was like a big game of tag, but it took France many, many years, until 1903, to finally say they had control of the whole country. During this time, many people sadly lost their lives. It was a very difficult period for Algeria.
Algeria Becomes a French Part
After France took over, Algeria became a part of France itself, like a new state in America! This lasted from 1848 all the way until 1962. Many people from Europe, especially France, moved to Algeria to live. They were called 'colons' and later 'pieds-noirs'. But the people who were already living in Algeria, the native Algerians, didn't have as much freedom or say in how things were run.
Wanting Freedom!
The native Algerians weren't happy. They wanted to be in charge of their own country and have the same rights as everyone else. This feeling grew stronger and stronger. In 1945, there was a very sad event called the Sétif and Guelma massacre. This made things even worse and led to a big fight called the Algerian War. It was a long and tough war for everyone involved.
A New Beginning!
Finally, after many years of struggle, Algeria became an independent country on July 5, 1962. This meant they could make their own rules and choose their own leaders. It was a huge moment for Algeria! Even though it was part of France for so long, it was now its own special place in the world, ready to start a new chapter.
