Meet the Amazing Flint!

Flint is a special kind of rock that's super hard and a little bit shiny, like glass! It's made of something called quartz. Sometimes it's dark grey or black inside, but it can also be green, white, or brown. The outside of a flint rock often has a rough, white coating. You can find these cool rocks near rivers and on beaches, waiting to be discovered!

Tools from the Stone Age!

Millions of years ago, long before we had metal knives, people used flint to make sharp tools. They would chip away at it, making edges so sharp they could cut things! These tools were like early knives and scrapers. Because flint is so tough, scientists can still find these ancient tools today and know exactly how old they are. Flint was super important for people living way back then!

Making Fire with Sparks!

Did you know flint can help start a fire? When you hit flint just right with a piece of steel, it makes tiny, hot sparks! These sparks can catch onto dry leaves or grass, called tinder, and POOF! You have a fire. This is how people made fire for thousands of years. Even today, the little spark makers in lighters are sometimes called 'flints' because they work in a similar way!

Flint: A Treasure to Find!

Finding flint was so important for people in the Stone Age that they would travel very, very far to get it. There were special places, like Grime's Graves in Europe and Flint Ridge in America, where people dug up lots of flint. They would trade this special stone with people in other places, sometimes even hundreds of miles away! It was like finding gold for them.
