Key Facts
A Land All Their Own!
Imagine a giant island continent way, way down south! That's Australia. For millions of years, its animals lived all by themselves, like a secret clubhouse. Because they were so isolated, many of them became super special and are found only in Australia. It’s like having a whole playground filled with animals you can’t find anywhere else in the world!
Meet the Pouch Pals!
Most animals have babies that can walk around soon after they are born. But in Australia, many animals, called marsupials, have babies that are tiny and climb into a special pouch on their mom's tummy! Kangaroos, koalas, and wombats are all marsupials. Their babies stay safe and snug in the pouch, getting bigger and stronger until they are ready to explore.
Wicked Wild Wonders!
Australia is also home to some seriously cool, and sometimes a little bit scary, creatures. It has more venomous snakes than non-venomous ones – wow! There are also amazing creatures like the platypus, which is like a duck and a beaver mixed together, and it lays eggs! Plus, there are plenty of spiders, jellyfish, and even some fish that have a powerful sting.
Animals of Long Ago and Today
A very, very long time ago, people first came to Australia. Later, more people arrived from far away. Sadly, some animals that used to live there are now gone forever because their homes changed or new animals arrived that they couldn't compete with. But Australia is working hard to protect its amazing animals, creating special places where they can live safely.
