Exxon Valdez Oil Spill - 0004

Key Facts
Meet the Giant Ship!
Once upon a time, there was a super-duper big ship called the Exxon Valdez. It was like a floating city carrying lots and lots of oil! This ship was on its way to California, but one night, it bumped into a rocky place called Bligh Reef. Oops! This accident caused a giant spill of oil into the beautiful ocean water.
Uh Oh! A Messy Ocean!
When the ship hit the reef, it ripped open and started leaking oil. It was like a giant bathtub overflowing! More than 10 million gallons of oil gushed out. That's enough oil to fill about 150,000 swimming pools! This sticky, black oil spread out and made a big mess in the water and on the beaches.
Who Lives There? So Many Animals!
The place where the spill happened is called Prince William Sound, and it's a home for many amazing animals. There are playful sea otters, sleek seals, and lots of different kinds of birds. Fish like salmon also live there. The oil spill made it very hard for these animals to live safely and find food.
Cleaning Up the Big Mess
Trying to clean up so much oil was a really, really hard job. The ocean is so big, and the spill spread out over a long, long way, like stretching from your house to your friend's house and back again, many times! People worked hard to try and clean the beaches and help the animals, but it took a very long time.
