Ethiopian Highlands
Key Facts
Meet the Giant Mountains!
The Ethiopian Highlands are like a super-sized mountain range in Africa, mostly in Ethiopia. They are so big and so high, they're sometimes called the 'Roof of Africa'! Most of the land here is higher than 1,500 meters, which is taller than about 10 school buses stacked on top of each other. Some of the mountain tops reach way, way up, almost as high as 15,000 feet!
A Big Crack in the Land!
Guess what? A giant crack, called the Great Rift Valley, splits these amazing highlands right down the middle! It's like a huge canyon that runs for thousands of miles, from way up north to way down south. This crack makes the land bumpy and interesting. The highlands are mostly in Ethiopia, but a part of them stretches into a country called Eritrea.
Why Are They So Special?
These highlands are super important because they are the biggest area of high land on the whole continent of Africa. Ethiopia is the only country in that part of Africa with such a high and large mountain area. This special place has been around for a very, very long time, and it's home to amazing plants and animals.
Sharing with Neighbors!
Did you know that the rocks and land of the Ethiopian Highlands are also found across the Red Sea in a country called Yemen? It's like they share a secret underground connection! This means people and even nature in these places have some things in common, even though they are far apart.
