Emmett Till

Imagine a boy named Emmett Till, who loved to laugh and play. He was born in a big city called Chicago, where he lived with his mom. Emmett was a happy kid, and he was only 14 years old when he went on a special trip to visit his relatives in a place called Mississippi. It was summer vacation, and he was excited to explore and have fun!

While visiting Mississippi, Emmett went to a store. Something happened there, and sadly, some people got very angry. Emmett was taken away from his family by some men. They hurt him very badly. His body was found later in a river. It was a terrible and unfair thing that happened to him.

Emmett's mom wanted everyone to see what happened. She had an open casket at his funeral so people could see how he was hurt. This made many people sad and angry, and they wanted to make sure this would never happen again. It was like a small spark that helped start a big movement for fairness.

Even though Emmett was very young, his story is still important. It reminds us that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. There are now special places and even a law named after him to help make sure people are safe and treated fairly. His story helps us learn and grow.
