Meet the Sleeping Giant!

El Altar is a HUGE, old volcano in a place called Ecuador. It's so tall, its highest point is 5,319 meters (that's like stacking 10 Eiffel Towers on top of each other!). It's located in a big park called Sangay National Park. Even though it's a volcano, it's not expected to erupt anymore because it's extinct, meaning it's fallen asleep forever!

What's in a Name?

The name 'El Altar' means 'The Altar' in Spanish. Long ago, explorers saw the mountain and thought it looked like a church altar with nuns and friars gathered around. It's also called Capac Urcu, which means 'principal mountain' in an old language called Kichwa. It's a very important and magnificent mountain!

A Mountain of Stories

El Altar is part of a special protected area called Sangay National Park. This park is full of amazing nature, like other volcanoes and forests. Because El Altar is so tall and impressive, it's a special place for people who love nature and want to see incredible sights. It’s a place where you can imagine ancient stories happening!

A Colorful View

Even though El Altar is a volcano, it's surrounded by beautiful landscapes. The weather can change quickly up high, so it might be sunny one minute and cloudy the next. Imagine seeing this giant mountain peek through the clouds! It’s a truly breathtaking sight that makes you feel small and amazed by nature's power.
