Key Facts
Where is This Awesome Place?
Imagine a special part of New York City called Manhattan! The East Village is on the east side, like the right side of a map. It's a neighborhood, which is like a small town inside a big city. It's south of 14th Street, which is a big street, and north of Houston Street, another big street. It's also east of a street called the Bowery and Third Avenue. It's a busy place with lots to see and do!
From Fancy Houses to Funky Vibes!
A super long time ago, this area was home to Native American people called the Lenape. Then, Dutch settlers came and made big farms. Later, rich people built fancy houses that were like giant mansions!
But then, lots of people from different countries moved in, making it like a mini-Germany. In the 1960s, artists and musicians moved in, making it a super cool and creative place, like a giant art studio!
Secrets of the Streets!
Did you know the East Village has secret names for some of its streets? East of First Avenue, there are streets named A, B, C, and D! People call this part Alphabet City. There's also a place called Little Ukraine, where many people from Ukraine used to live. It's like having different little countries inside one big neighborhood!
Why We Love the East Village!
The East Village is special because it's always changing and full of surprises. It used to be home to fancy houses, then immigrants, and now it's a place for artists and musicians. It shows how neighborhoods can grow and change over time, like how you grow bigger each year! It's a place that has its own unique feeling, different from other parts of the city.
