Key Facts
The Great Disappearing Act!
Sometimes, a lot of plants and animals on Earth vanish really, really fast. This is called an extinction event. It's like if all the dogs in the world suddenly disappeared, or all the trees!
It means the number of different kinds of living things gets much smaller, very quickly. Scientists have counted at least five super big disappearing acts in Earth's past, and maybe even more! It's a sad time for life on our planet.
When Did the Big Vanishing Happen?
These big disappearing acts have happened many times over millions and millions of years. Think about a time so long ago that dinosaurs were still stomping around! That was before the last really big extinction event.
Scientists study old rocks and fossils to figure out when these events happened and what might have caused them. It's like being a detective, but for Earth's history. They look for clues to understand how life changed.
Why Does Life Disappear?
What makes so many living things disappear at once? It could be big changes in our planet. Maybe giant volcanoes erupted everywhere, or a giant space rock, like an asteroid, crashed into Earth!
These huge events can change the weather, make the oceans different, or block out the sun. When the world changes too fast, many plants and animals can't survive anymore. Itβs like trying to live in a snowstorm in the middle of summer.
What Happens After?
Even though extinction events are sad because many creatures are lost forever, life is amazing and always finds a way! After a big disappearing act, the animals and plants that do survive get a chance to grow and change. New kinds of creatures might start to appear.
For example, after the dinosaurs disappeared, mammals, like us, had more space and chances to become the amazing variety of animals we see today. Life keeps going!
