Key Facts
Meet the Giant Space Rock!
A long, long, LONG time ago, about 66 million years in the past, a giant space rock, like a super-big asteroid, zoomed towards our planet Earth. It was so big, it was wider than the country of Belgium! When it hit, it made a gigantic hole in the ground. This enormous dent is called the Chicxulub crater. It's mostly hidden now, buried under layers of rock and even under the ocean!
A Hole Bigger Than Your Town!
This crater is unbelievably massive. It's about 93 miles (150 kilometers) across. That's like fitting more than 10,000 soccer fields side-by-side! The impact was so powerful it sent dust and rocks flying everywhere, even into space. It was like the biggest explosion ever, way, way bigger than any fireworks you've ever seen.
Why It's a Super Big Deal!
This giant space punch had a HUGE effect on Earth. It caused a lot of changes, like making the sky dark and the weather go crazy. Sadly, many plants and animals couldn't survive these changes. This event is super important because it's thought to be the reason why the dinosaurs disappeared from Earth forever!
What We See Today
Even though we can't see the whole crater easily because it's buried, scientists have found clues. They found special rocks and a ring shape deep underground. This helps them understand how the Earth changed and what happened after the giant rock hit. It's like being a detective, looking for clues about Earth's past!
