Crayfish: Tiny River Dragons!

Crayfish are like tiny, armored tanks that scuttle around in freshwater. They have ten legs, with the front two being super strong claws! When they grow, they have to shed this old shell and grow a new, bigger one!

You can find crayfish in all sorts of watery homes! They love rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. They like to hide under rocks, logs, or in burrows they dig themselves. Some crayfish even live in the ocean, but the ones we usually see are freshwater friends. They are found on almost every continent, from North America to Europe and Australia!

Crayfish are not picky eaters! They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. They love to munch on small fish, insects, snails, and worms. They also enjoy eating plants and algae that grow in the water. They are like little underwater scavengers, cleaning up by eating things that have died. They use their little feelers to find yummy snacks.

Did you know crayfish can regrow lost claws or legs? If a predator grabs a leg, the crayfish can break it off and grow a new one later! They also have amazing eyesight, with eyes on stalks that can see in almost every direction. Some crayfish can even change color to blend in with their surroundings, making them hard to spot.
