Key Facts
Where the Sky Touches the Mountains!
The Cordillera Central páramo is a special place way, way up high in the Andes Mountains. It's so tall that the trees can't grow there anymore! Instead, you find a fuzzy, green carpet of plants called páramo. This amazing place is shared by two countries: Peru and Ecuador. It's like a secret garden hidden above the clouds, where the air is crisp and cool.
A Home for Unique Critters!
Because this place is so far away and hard to reach, many of the plants and animals that live here can't be found anywhere else in the whole world! It's like having your own special playground that only you and your friends know about. These unique creatures have adapted to live in the chilly, windy páramo. They are super special and need our help to stay safe.
A Little Bit of Everything!
Even though it's high up, people have built homes and farms in and around the páramo. They use the land for growing food and raising animals. Sometimes, people dig for shiny rocks, which can change the land. But even with people living there, a lot of the páramo is still wild and beautiful, like a giant, green blanket covering the mountains.
Why This Mountain Home Matters!
This high-up land is super important because it holds lots of water. The plants soak up rain and mist, and then slowly release it, like a giant sponge. This water flows down to rivers that people and animals need to drink. So, even though it's far away, the páramo helps give water to many places below. It's a natural water factory!
