Long, long ago, people didn't have coins. They used to trade things directly, like swapping a chicken for a bag of apples! Then, people started using shiny metal pieces, like gold and silver, that were all the same size and weight.

The very first coins were made in a place called Lydia, which is now part of Turkey, over 2,700 years ago. They were made from a special yellow metal called electrum. These early coins were like stamped pieces of metal, showing they were official and worth a certain amount.

Coins are like the building blocks of buying and selling. Without them, it would be super hard to get things! They make trading fair because everyone agrees on how much a coin is worth.
