Code of Hammurabi

A long, long time ago, in a land called Babylon, there was a super important king named Hammurabi. He was like the boss of a big kingdom! Hammurabi wanted to make sure everyone in his land knew what was fair and what wasn't. So, he came up with a brilliant idea: he wrote down all the rules for people to follow. It was like creating the first big rulebook for an entire country!

King Hammurabi didn't just write his rules on paper. Oh no! He had them carved onto a giant, tall stone pillar, like a giant black obelisk. This stone was so big, it was taller than a grown-up giraffe! It had nearly 300 laws written on it in a special language. People could look at this stone and learn how to behave and what would happen if they broke the rules.

These laws were all about making things fair. If someone stole something, there was a punishment. If someone hurt another person, there was a consequence. Some laws were even about things like how much you should pay for a cow or a sheep! It was Hammurabi's way of trying to make sure his kingdom was a safe and orderly place for everybody.

Even though Hammurabi lived thousands of years ago, his Code of Laws is super famous! It's one of the oldest examples we have of written laws that tried to cover almost everything. It shows us how people long ago thought about justice and how they tried to create a society where everyone knew the rules. It's like a peek into the past to see how laws started!
