Key Facts
Meet the Giant Watery Neighbor!
The Chesapeake Bay is like a super-duper big bathtub for fish and crabs! It’s the biggest estuary in the whole United States. An estuary is a special place where salty ocean water mixes with fresh river water, making it just right for lots of sea creatures.
This giant bay stretches for about 200 miles, which is like driving from your house to visit a faraway friend! It's bordered by states like Maryland and Virginia, and lots of rivers flow into it, bringing fresh water and tiny bits of land.
What's It Like to Visit?
The Chesapeake Bay is super wide in some spots, as wide as 30 miles! That’s like lining up 30 school buses nose to tail. In other places, it’s much narrower, only about 3 miles wide.
The water isn't super deep everywhere, usually around 21 feet, which is about as tall as two giraffes stacked on top of each other. But in some deep spots, it can be as deep as a 10-story building! The bay has a huge shoreline, so long it would take ages to walk all the way around it.
Home to Amazing Animals!
This bay is a busy place for animals! It’s famous for its yummy blue crabs and slippery oysters. Lots of different kinds of fish swim in its waters, and birds love to visit and eat them.
But sometimes, the water gets a little too dirty from things like too much fertilizer from farms or trash from cities. This can make it hard for the crabs and oysters to live and grow, so people are working hard to clean up the bay and help the animals.
People and the Bay: Best Friends Forever?
People have lived near the Chesapeake Bay for a very, very long time. They love to fish for crabs and oysters, which are important foods. They also enjoy boating and swimming in the bay.
But when people aren't careful, they can accidentally make the water dirty. That’s why it’s super important for everyone to help keep the bay clean by not littering and by using less stuff that can wash into the water. When the bay is healthy, everyone is happy!
