Key Facts
Meet the Sneaky Serpent!
Imagine a person who was super good at pretending to be nice, but was actually a thief and a trickster! That was Charles Sobhraj. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1944.
He traveled to faraway places like India and Thailand, where he met tourists who were exploring. He was known by cool nicknames like the 'Bikini Killer' because of how some people he hurt were dressed, and the 'Serpent' because he was so good at hiding from the police, like a snake slithering away!
His Tricky Travels
Charles Sobhraj loved to travel, especially to sunny places where people went on vacation in the 1970s. He would meet travelers, act like their friend, and then steal from them or do even worse things. He was so charming that people didn't suspect him!
He was like a wolf in sheep's clothing. He was caught and put in jail in India for a very long time, from 1976 all the way to 1997. That's longer than you've been alive!
Why He's Famous (But Not in a Good Way!)
Even though he did bad things, Charles Sobhraj became famous. He was on TV shows and in movies! People were fascinated by how he could be so clever and get away with things for so long.
He even seemed to like being famous for his crimes. It's like being famous for being the best at a game, but the game was hurting people. He was eventually caught again in Nepal and sent to prison, but he was let out because he was very old.
The Serpent's Last Slither
After being in jail for many years in India, Charles Sobhraj went back to France. But his story wasn't over! He went to Nepal in 2003 and was arrested again.
He stayed in prison there for 19 years. Finally, in 2022, because he was so old, a court decided he could go home to France. It's a strange story about someone who used his smarts in a very wrong way, and how the world remembered him through stories and movies.
