Catla: The Big-Mouthed River Fish!

Imagine a fish with a head as wide as a dinner plate and a mouth that seems to smile because its lower jaw sticks out! That's the Catla! It has big, grayish scales on its back and a white tummy. These fish can get really, really big – as long as a grown-up is tall and as heavy as a small pony! They are like the gentle giants of the rivers and lakes they call home.

Catla fish are native to the rivers and lakes of countries like India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. Think of them as living in a big, watery neighborhood in South Asia. Sometimes, people move them to new places to farm them, so you might find them in other watery spots too. They love to swim near the top and in the middle of the water, looking for yummy food.

The Catla is a very busy eater! When it's a tiny baby fish, it nibbles on super-small plants called phytoplankton. As it grows up, it starts eating tiny swimming animals called zooplankton. Adult Catlas have special, big filters in their mouths, like tiny sieves, to catch lots of these little snacks from the water. They are like underwater vacuum cleaners, always searching for their next meal!

Catla are super important because people love to eat them! They are farmed a lot, which means people help them grow in special ponds. This helps make sure there are enough fish for everyone. They also play a role in their natural homes, helping to keep the water clean by eating tiny things. They grow up fast and can become parents when they are just two years old!
