Catherine I of Russia

Catherine I was an empress in Russia, a HUGE country in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. Think of a place so big it covers more land than the moon! Russia has super cold winters with lots of snow, perfect for building snow forts. It also has amazing forests and wide-open spaces. The main city where she lived and ruled was called St. Petersburg, a beautiful city with canals like Venice.

Catherine wasn't born a princess. She was born Marta Skavronskaya, and her life started out very simply. But she was smart and brave!

She met Peter the Great, the ruler of Russia, and he was very impressed by her. They fell in love, got married, and she became his wife. When Peter the Great passed away, Catherine became the empress herself!

Can you imagine going from a regular person to ruling a whole country?

As empress, Catherine was the boss of Russia! She wore beautiful dresses and lived in fancy palaces. She was married to Peter the Great, who was famous for making Russia a stronger country. Catherine helped him with his big ideas. She was known for being kind and caring, and she wanted to make life better for the people of Russia. She ruled for a short time, but she made a big impression.

Being an empress was a very important job. Catherine had to make big decisions about laws and how the country was run. She worked with advisors to help her.

Even though she only ruled for two years, she was the first woman to rule Russia all by herself. This was a really big deal because usually, men were in charge of countries back then. She showed everyone that women could be strong leaders too!
