British Antarctic Territory in United Kingdom

Key Facts
Where is This Icy Land?
The British Antarctic Territory is a super big, wedge-shaped piece of Antarctica, the coldest continent on Earth! It's like a giant slice of pizza that goes all the way to the South Pole. It's so far south that it's covered in ice and snow all year round. Think of it as the UK's most extreme backyard, way, way down south!
A Land of Ice and Science!
This amazing place is mostly covered in thick ice, sometimes as thick as a giant skyscraper is tall! It's a land of amazing icebergs and freezing cold temperatures. Because it's so cold and remote, not many people live there.
Instead, scientists from the British Antarctic Survey and other countries have special research stations to study the weather, ice, and amazing animals like penguins and seals.
When Did This Land Become British?
The UK started saying this part of Antarctica was theirs a long, long time ago, even before your grandparents were born! It officially became the British Antarctic Territory in 1962. Before that, it was part of other British places. It's a very special place, and even the Queen's name is on a part of it called Queen Elizabeth Land!
Who Lives and Works Here?
There are no towns or cities like we have here. The only people you'll find are scientists and the people who help them, like cooks and mechanics. They live in research stations, which are like small villages in the snow. They are very brave to live in such a cold and faraway place, all to learn more about our amazing planet!
