BIMSTEC: Friends by the Big Blue Bay!

BIMSTEC, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, represents a significant regional architecture connecting South and Southeast Asia. Its seven member states – Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand – are strategically positioned around the Bay of Bengal, a crucial maritime artery for global trade and a region rich in natural resources.

This alliance is not merely a geographical grouping; it encompasses a colossal population of 1.73 billion people, nearly a quarter of the world's population, and commands a substantial combined Gross Domestic Product of US$5.2 trillion as of 2023. The shared dependence on the Bay of Bengal fosters a natural synergy, driving the need for collaborative approaches to maritime security, trade facilitation, and sustainable development.

The origins of BIMSTEC can be traced back to the mid-1990s, a period marked by a growing recognition of the benefits of sub-regional cooperation. Initially formed in 1997 as BISTEC (Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand Economic Cooperation), it expanded to include Myanmar and Nepal in 1997, and Bhutan in 2004, thus becoming BIMSTEC. This evolution reflects a deliberate strategy to broaden its scope and membership, aiming to create a more comprehensive platform for economic and technical exchange.

The organization's development has been characterized by a gradual expansion of its mandate and the establishment of various centers dedicated to specific areas of cooperation.
