Key Facts
Where is Berlin?
Berlin is a super big city in Germany, a country in Europe. After a big war, different countries were in charge of different parts of Germany, including Berlin. But Berlin was split into parts, and one part, West Berlin, was surrounded by another country called the Soviet Union. This meant West Berlin was like an island in the middle of Soviet-controlled land. It was a tricky spot to be in!
The Big Roadblock!
One day, the Soviet Union decided to block all the roads, train tracks, and even the canals that led to West Berlin. It was like someone putting a giant fence around a playground and saying, 'Nobody in, nobody out!' This meant no food, no coal for heating, and no toys could get to the people living in West Berlin. They were cut off from everything they needed to live!
Flying to the Rescue!
But the people in West Berlin didn't give up! Brave pilots from America and Britain said, 'We'll fly everything in!' They started the Berlin Airlift, flying planes day and night. They dropped food, coal, and other important things. Imagine planes landing every 30 seconds! Some planes were even called 'raisin bombers' because they dropped candy for the kids!
Sweet Success!
The pilots flew over 278,000 times, bringing more than 2 million tons of supplies. That's like filling up thousands of school buses with food and coal! The Soviet Union saw how well the airlift was working and finally opened the roads again. The people of West Berlin were saved, all thanks to the amazing pilots and their flying adventure!
