Hello, Summer! It's Party Time!

Beltane is like a giant, ancient party that says, 'Hooray, summer is here!' It happens around May 1st, right in the middle of spring and summer. People in places like Ireland and Scotland used to celebrate it a LOT. It was a special day to welcome the warm weather and all the fun that comes with it. Think of it as the official start of sunshine and outdoor adventures!

Bonfires and Bright Flowers!

One of the coolest things about Beltane was the HUGE bonfires! People would light them up, and the flames, smoke, and even the ashes were thought to be magical. They believed these fires would protect everyone and everything.

People and their farm animals would walk around or even jump over the bonfires! They also decorated their homes and animals with bright yellow flowers, like sunshine on a stick!

Magical May Bushes and Wishing Wells!

Kids would love making a 'May Bush'! It was usually a small tree branch decorated with colorful ribbons, shiny shells, and little lights. People also visited special 'holy wells' and believed that washing their faces with the morning dew from May 1st would make them look younger and more beautiful. It was like a natural spa day for everyone!

Sharing the Sparkle!

After all the exciting rituals, everyone would have a big feast together. They would share yummy food and drinks. Some of the food was even offered to magical beings called the 'aos sí'. It was a time for everyone to come together, celebrate the new season, and share in the joy and magic of summer starting.
