Meet the Mountain King!

Mount Pico is like a giant sleeping on Pico Island, which is part of the Azores islands. These islands are way out in the big, blue Atlantic Ocean. This mountain is so tall, it's the highest point in all of Portugal! It's much, much taller than any other mountain in the Azores, like a superhero standing above everyone else.

How Tall is This Giant?

Mount Pico is a whopping 2,351 meters (that's 7,713 feet!) high. To give you an idea, that's taller than 100 school buses stacked on top of each other! It's so high that sometimes clouds wrap around its top like a cozy blanket. It's a special place called a nature reserve, meaning it's protected to keep it safe and wild.

What's it Like Up There?

Since Mount Pico is a volcano, it's made of old lava rocks. It's a 'stratovolcano', which means it's built up in layers over a very, very long time. Even though it's a volcano, it's sleeping right now and hasn't erupted in ages. The weather can change super fast up high, from sunny to cloudy and windy!

Island Life Near the Giant

Pico Island is a beautiful place where people live near the giant mountain. They have their own special ways of life. The island is part of Portugal, a country in Europe. People on the island speak Portuguese. Mount Pico is a famous landmark that makes Pico Island very special and unique.
