They had lots of land and money, which helped them stay in charge. It wasn't usually a choice for people to become aristocrats; it was often something they were born into.

The word 'aristocracy' comes from a very old language called Greek. It means 'rule of the best'. Long, long ago, people thought that the smartest and most capable people should be in charge. So, they picked a small group of these 'best' people to lead. In many places, like Europe, these aristocrats were like the kings and queens of their own little worlds, making big decisions for everyone.

These aristocrats had a HUGE amount of influence! They controlled a lot of the land and money, which meant they could tell people what to do. They were like the super-important grown-ups in a town who made all the big plans. Their decisions affected where people lived, what jobs they did, and how things were run. It was a big deal who was part of this ruling group!

Even though the word sounds like 'best', not everyone who was wealthy or important was an aristocrat. In places like Europe, there were different levels of 'nobility'.
