Welcome to the Big Alaskan Town!

Anchorage is the biggest city in Alaska, like a super-sized playground for people! Lots of people live here, almost half of everyone in the whole state. It's so big that it's also one of the largest cities in the whole United States, even though Alaska has lots of space.

It sits right where two big bays, Knik Arm and Turnagain Arm, meet the ocean. It's a place where nature and city life meet in a really cool way!

How Anchorage Got Its Start!

Once upon a time, long ago, Anchorage was just a little tent city! It all started when people began building a super long train track called the Alaska Railroad. That was in 1915. Soon, more and more people came to live and work, and the town grew bigger and bigger. It officially became a city in 1920. Now, it's a huge city that even joined up with other nearby areas to become even larger!

Where the Wild Things Are (and Planes Too!)

Anchorage is super special because it's a stopping point for airplanes from all over the world! It's almost the same distance from New York City as it is from Tokyo, Japan. This means airplanes can easily refuel here on their long journeys. It's like a giant pit stop for planes! You can also find amazing nature nearby, like Chugach State Park, where you might see moose or bears!

Anchorage's Awesome Awards!

Guess what? Anchorage has won some really cool awards! It's been named an 'All-America City' four times, which means it's a fantastic place to live. It's also known for being a very friendly city when it comes to taxes, which is great for the people who live there. It's a city that's proud of its nature, its people, and its important role in the world!
