Al Smith was a very busy politician in New York a long, long time ago. He was born in a noisy city neighborhood near the famous Brooklyn Bridge. Imagine living your whole life in the same exciting place! Al worked hard and became the boss of New York, called the Governor. He helped make lots of new rules to make things better for everyone.

Al grew up in a busy city and learned a lot about people. He started by working in the government building where laws are made. Then, he became the Sheriff, like a chief police officer! After that, he became Governor of New York, which is like being the captain of a whole state. He was so good at his job that people voted for him many times!

Guess what? Al Smith was the very first person from his church, called Catholic, to run for president of the whole United States! This was a really big deal. Some people were worried because they didn't understand his religion, but many others cheered him on. He also believed people should be allowed to drink juice like grape juice, not just water, which was different back then!

Even after his big presidential race, Al kept working. He helped with a super famous building in New York called the Empire State Building. It's so tall, it's like stacking 100 school buses on top of each other! Al Smith was a leader who cared about his city and helped build amazing things.
