Afonso I of Portugal

Imagine a brave knight who became a king! That was Afonso I. He was born a long, long time ago, between 1106 and 1111. His parents were rulers, but Afonso wanted to be in charge of his own land. He was so strong and determined that he fought to make his country, Portugal, a brand new kingdom. He was like the captain of a soccer team who decided to start his own league!

Afonso's mom was in charge, but he didn't agree with some of her decisions. So, he bravely led a revolt! He even fought against his own mom in a battle called the Battle of São Mamede.

After winning, he became the main leader, the Count of Portugal. Then, in 1139, he declared Portugal an independent kingdom, like saying 'This is our playground now!' He was a super-smart leader who knew how to get things done.

Afonso wasn't just a king; he was a conqueror! He fought many battles to make Portugal bigger and stronger. He was especially good at fighting against the Moors, who were people from North Africa. He won a huge battle at Ourique and even captured important cities like Lisbon. He was like a superhero expanding his territory, making his kingdom twice as large!

Afonso I is called 'the Founder' because he literally founded the Kingdom of Portugal! Before him, it was just a small county. He made it a real country with its own king.

He also helped make it much bigger by winning battles. Because of him, Portugal became a strong and independent nation. He's remembered as one of the most important figures in Portuguese history, like the person who invented your favorite game!
