Battle of Ourique

Long, long ago, in a land called Portugal, there was a brave leader named Afonso Henriques. He wanted his land to be its own country! But another leader, Muhammad Az-Zubayr Ibn Umar, who was like a governor from a faraway city, didn't want that. They met on a special day, July 25th, in the year 1139, for a big showdown. It was like a giant game of tag, but with real knights and horses!

On that hot summer day, Afonso Henriques and his soldiers faced Muhammad Az-Zubayr Ibn Umar and his army. It was a super intense battle! Imagine hundreds of knights on horses, clashing with swords and shields. The Portuguese soldiers were determined to win their freedom. They fought with all their might, and in the end, Afonso Henriques's army was victorious. It was a huge win for them!

This battle was like the most important puzzle piece for Portugal becoming its own country. Before this fight, Portugal was kind of part of another kingdom. But after Afonso Henriques won, it showed everyone he was strong and his land deserved to be independent.
