Feudalism
Key Facts
What's This Feudal Thing?
Feudalism was like a giant game of sharing land and jobs a super long time ago. Kings had tons of land, but they couldn't manage it all by themselves. So, they'd give big chunks of land to important people called lords.
These lords promised to help the king, like sending soldiers if there was a fight. It was a way to keep everything organized when there weren't many police or government workers like we have today.
Knights in Shining Armor!
Under the lords were knights, who were like super-strong protectors. They got smaller pieces of land from the lords and promised to fight for them. Knights were trained from a young age to be good at fighting with swords and riding horses.
They wore heavy armor, which was like a metal suit, to stay safe in battles. People felt safer knowing knights were around to defend their homes and villages from bad guys.
Farmers on the Farm
Most people back then were farmers, called peasants or serfs. They didn't own land. Instead, they worked the land that belonged to the lords or knights. They grew food for everyone, but they had to give a lot of it to their lord. In return, the lord would protect them. It was a tough life, and they couldn't just leave the land whenever they wanted.
Why Was It a Big Deal?
Feudalism helped keep places from falling into total chaos. It created a system where everyone had a role, from the king at the top to the farmers at the bottom. It was like a pyramid, with power and land flowing down. This system helped build castles and towns because lords and knights had the resources and people to do it. It shaped how countries were run for hundreds of years!
