Adélie Land

Adélie Land is a super far-away place way down in Antarctica, the coldest continent on Earth! It’s like a giant slice of pie that stretches from the chilly ocean all the way to the very bottom of the world, the South Pole. It’s so big, it’s hard to even imagine!

France claims this special part of Antarctica as their own. It's a land of ice and snow, with freezing temperatures and strong winds, making it a very wild and beautiful place.

This land is mostly covered in thick, white ice, like a giant ice cream scoop! It’s super cold there, colder than your freezer, and sometimes the wind blows so hard it feels like a giant is trying to push you over. There aren't any trees or grass like in your backyard.

Instead, you'll find vast stretches of ice and snow, with maybe some rocky areas peeking through. It’s a very quiet and peaceful place, mostly visited by scientists who study the amazing animals that live there.

Adélie Land is mostly home to scientists who work at a special research station. They are like explorers who study the weather, the ice, and the amazing animals that live in Antarctica. The most famous residents are the Adélie penguins!

These cute birds waddle around in big groups. They are black and white, and they love to swim in the icy ocean. Sometimes, you might also see seals lounging on the ice.

It’s a place for nature, not for big cities or lots of people.

France has been looking after this part of Antarctica for a long time, since 1955! They have a research station there, which is like a small village for scientists. These scientists are very important because they learn about our planet and how it’s changing.

They send their discoveries back to France and the rest of the world. Even though it’s a French territory, all countries that visit Antarctica agree to be peaceful and protect the environment, like a big club with rules.
