Aceh: Indonesia's Amazing Western Corner!

Aceh is like the pointy hat on top of a big island called Sumatra, way over in Indonesia! It's the westernmost part, meaning it's the furthest west you can go in Indonesia. To its sides, you'll find the giant Indian Ocean and the busy Strait of Malacca.

It only has one land neighbor, another part of Indonesia called North Sumatra. It's so far west, it even has neighbors across the sea like Malaysia and India!

Lots of people call Aceh home, about 5.55 million! That's more people than live in some big cities. The biggest group are the Acehnese people, who make up most of the folks there. There are also ten other groups of people who have lived there for a very, very long time. Everyone lives together in this special place on Sumatra island.

Aceh is a very special place in Indonesia because it gets to make many of its own rules. It's like having a special pass to decide how things work there! Most people in Aceh are Muslim, and it's the only place in Indonesia where they officially follow Islamic Sharia law. This makes Aceh unique and gives it its own special way of life.

Aceh has a long and exciting history! It was one of the first places where Islam came to Indonesia, a long, long time ago, around 1250 AD. Later, the Sultanate of Aceh was super powerful and rich, like a king's treasure chest! Aceh has always been strong and proud, even when others tried to rule them.
