Meet the Barefoot Running Hero!

Abebe Bikila was a super-fast runner from Ethiopia. He was so fast that he won the biggest race in the world, the Olympic marathon, not once, but twice! The first time, in Rome in 1960, he did something nobody expected: he ran the whole race barefoot! His feet were tough like leather, and he loved the feeling of the ground. He won that race so fast, he set a new world record!

From Soldier to Speed Star!

Before becoming a famous runner, Abebe was a soldier in Ethiopia. He was part of the Emperor's special guard, which is like being a superhero protecting the king! He even went to a big war called the Korean War. But his real talent was running. He joined a special army running team and started winning races. He ran in sixteen marathons in his life and won most of them!

Two Gold Medals, Two World Records!

Four years after his barefoot win, Abebe went to the Olympics again in Tokyo. This time, he wore shoes, but he was still super speedy! He won another gold medal and broke his own world record again. He's the only person ever to win the Olympic marathon twice in a row and set a world record each time. That's like scoring the winning goal in two World Cup finals!

A Legend Who Inspired Many!

Even after a serious accident made it hard for him to walk, Abebe didn't give up on sports. He tried new things like archery and even competed in games for people with disabilities. His bravery and amazing running made him a legend.

Many runners from his part of the world, like Haile Gebrselassie, followed in his footsteps and became champions too. He showed everyone what's possible with determination!
