1980 Summer Olympics

In 1980, the biggest sports party on Earth, the Summer Olympics, happened in a city called Moscow. It was the first time the Olympics were held in a country that spoke Russian and was part of the Eastern Bloc. Think of it like the biggest playground ever, but instead of swings and slides, there were amazing sports like swimming, running, and gymnastics!

Usually, almost every country sends its best athletes to the Olympics. But in 1980, something sad happened. Because of a big disagreement between countries, many nations, including the United States, decided not to go. This meant fewer athletes than usual got to show off their skills. Some athletes still competed, but they marched under the Olympic flag instead of their country's flag.

Even though many countries missed out, the athletes who did come were super talented! The country that hosted, the Soviet Union, won a LOT of medals. They and another country called East Germany won more than half of all the gold medals given out! That's like winning almost every game at the playground!

These Olympics were special because they were the last ones with a certain president, and the first ones in a country that used a lot of big words like 'communism' to describe how they lived. It was a very different Olympics than many others we've seen before or since.
