Who Wanted to Be the Big Boss?

In 1956, two main grown-ups wanted to be the President of the United States. One was Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was already the President.

He was like a superhero from World War II! The other was Adlai Stevenson, who had been a governor before. People liked Eisenhower because he was a good leader and seemed very honest.

Stevenson wanted to spend more money on schools and helping people, and less on the army.

Why Did People Pick Ike?

President Eisenhower, nicknamed 'Ike,' was super popular! He had helped win a big war and the country was doing pretty well. Even though he got sick once, he got better and decided to run again. People thought he was a really nice and trustworthy person. When big problems happened in other countries right before the vote, how he handled them made even more people want to vote for him!

The Big Vote Count!

When all the votes were counted, President Eisenhower won again! It was like winning a big game. He got even more votes than the last time he ran. He even won in some places that usually voted for the other team. It was a really big win for him and his political team, the Republicans.

A Race We've Seen Before!

Guess what? This election was a rematch! Eisenhower and Stevenson had already raced against each other four years earlier. Eisenhower won that one too. It was the last time this happened for a long, long time. It was also the last election before a rule was made that presidents could only be president for a certain number of years.
