Wokou: The Pirates of Old Asia!

The Wokou were like the pirates of old stories, but they sailed the seas near China and Korea a long, long time ago, from about 700 years ago until about 300 years ago. They weren't just from one place; people from different lands joined their crews. They would sail from islands and raid the coastlines, which means they would attack towns and villages near the sea.

It was a bit like a game of tag, but with real boats and brave people trying to stop them!

These Wokou pirates didn't just appear out of nowhere! They often sailed from islands in the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea. Think of these islands as their secret hideouts.

From these bases, they would plan their adventures. Sometimes, their raids were more frequent, and other times, they were less common. It all depended on who was in charge and how well the people on the mainland could protect themselves.

The Wokou were a big problem for the people living by the sea in China and Korea. They would take things and cause trouble, making life scary for many. Because of this, the governments in those countries worked hard to stop them.

They built up defenses and sent out their own ships to chase the Wokou away. Eventually, by about 300 years ago, the Wokou raids stopped, and the seas became safer again.

Being a Wokou pirate wasn't always easy. They had to be brave and good sailors. They sailed on boats, which were their homes and their tools for raiding.
