Who Was King William IV?

Imagine a king who was once a sailor! That was William IV. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1765.

Before he became king, he spent many years in the navy, sailing on ships. He was the third son of King George III, which meant he wasn't expected to be king at first. But as his older brothers didn't have children who became king, William eventually got the crown.

He became king when he was already 60 years old, which is quite old for a new king!

A Sailor King's Adventures

William IV loved the sea and joined the Royal Navy when he was just a young boy, around 13 years old. He sailed to many places and even fought in battles. He was known as the 'Sailor King' because of his time in the navy.

He was very different from his brothers who were kings before him. He liked to be more relaxed and friendly, not always wearing fancy clothes. He was also known for his sense of humor and enjoyed talking to ordinary people.

Changes During His Reign

When William IV became king, Britain was changing a lot. One of the most important things that happened was the Great Reform Act of 1832. This law made the rules for voting fairer and gave more people the chance to have a say in how the country was run.

It was a big deal because it meant that not just rich people could vote. He also approved laws to stop slavery in most parts of the British Empire, which was a very kind and important decision.

Life After Being King

King William IV reigned for seven years, from 1830 until he passed away in 1837. He was 71 years old when he died. He didn't have any children, so when he died, his niece, Victoria, became the next queen.

Queen Victoria went on to have a very long and famous reign. William IV's time as king was important because it helped Britain move towards a more modern way of governing, with more people having a voice.
