Western Ghats

The Western Ghats are like a super long, bumpy mountain range that runs along the western side of India. They are so big, they stretch for about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles)! That's like driving from New York City all the way to Miami, Florida.

These mountains are covered in thick, green forests that are home to tons of cool animals and plants. They are like a giant, natural playground for nature lovers!

These mountains are super important because they help bring rain to India. When the wind blows from the ocean, it hits the Western Ghats and has to go up and over. As it goes up, it cools down and makes rain clouds, which then drop lots of rain on the land.

The Western Ghats are bursting with life! They are home to more than 300 kinds of birds, 150 kinds of mammals, and lots of colorful butterflies. You might even find tigers, elephants, and monkeys swinging through the trees!

There are also many special plants and animals that you can only find here, like the lion-tailed macaque, which is a monkey with a black body and a fluffy, lion-like tail. It’s a treasure chest of biodiversity!
