What's a Scandal, Anyway?

A scandal is like a big, embarrassing secret that gets out. The Watergate scandal was a huge one in America a long time ago. It all started when some people tried to sneak into a building called the Watergate complex.

They wanted to plant listening devices, like tiny microphones, to hear what people were saying. This was part of a plan to help President Richard Nixon win an election. But they got caught!

It was like being caught with your hand in the cookie jar, but much, much bigger.

The Sneaky Break-In!

On a night in June 1972, five people were caught breaking into the Democratic Party's office, which was inside the Watergate building. They weren't just looking for snacks; they were trying to find out secrets! These people were connected to President Nixon's team, who wanted him to win the election.

When the police caught them, it started a big investigation. It was like a detective story where everyone wanted to know who sent the sneaky people and why.

Did the President Know?

After the break-in, people started asking if President Nixon knew about it. He said he didn't! But as reporters dug deeper, they found out that people working for him were trying to hide the truth.

It was like trying to hide a messy room by shoving everything under the bed. The president's team even had secret recordings of conversations. Eventually, it became clear that the president was involved in trying to cover up the whole mess.

A President Says Goodbye

Because of the scandal, many people in charge had to leave their jobs, and some even went to jail. The people in charge of making laws, called Congress, started to think about removing the president from his job. This is called impeachment.

To avoid being removed, President Nixon decided to do something no other president had ever done: he resigned. That means he quit his job before he could be kicked out. It was a very important moment in American history.
