King Umberto's Big Job

Umberto I became king a long, long time ago, in 1878. He was like the main boss of Italy! He helped make Italy stronger by making friends with other countries, like Germany and Austria. He also wanted Italy to have lands far away, like places in Africa called Eritrea and Somalia.

When Things Got Tricky

Being king wasn't always easy. Some people in Italy were unhappy because things were expensive, like food. There were also big arguments about the wars Italy was fighting. Sometimes, the king had to make tough decisions that made people angry, and a few people even tried to hurt him!

A Sad Ending for the King

Sadly, King Umberto I's story ended in a very sad way. In the year 1900, a man who was very angry with the king hurt him. It was a shocking event for Italy. After he was gone, his son, Victor Emmanuel III, became the next king.
