Where is This Amazing Place?
The Umayyad Mosque is in a very old city called Damascus, which is the capital of Syria. Syria is a country in a part of the world called the Middle East. Imagine a big, bustling city where people have lived for a super, super long time!
The mosque is right in the middle of the old city, like the heart of a very ancient place. It's surrounded by other old buildings and busy streets where people have walked for centuries.

Inside the Umayyad Mosque, you can find amazing decorations! There are beautiful mosaics made of tiny colorful tiles, like a giant, sparkly picture. These mosaics cover a huge area, almost as big as a soccer field! They show pretty pictures of plants and trees, all made with shiny gold. It must have looked like a treasure chest when it was first finished!
Who Built This Giant?
Lots and lots of people worked together to build this amazing mosque. Thousands of workers and artists came from all over to help. They used money from treasures found during big journeys and taxes from soldiers. It took nine whole years to build! This shows how important it was to build a grand and beautiful place for people to pray and gather.
