What's This Treaty All About?

After a huge war called World War I, countries needed to make peace. One important agreement was called the Treaty of Trianon. It was signed in a fancy castle in France in 1920.

This treaty was like a big rulebook that decided where Hungary's land would be. It officially ended the fighting between Hungary and many other countries that had been enemies. It was a very important moment for Hungary and its neighbors.

Hungary's Land Gets Smaller!

Before this treaty, Hungary was part of a bigger empire. After the war, Hungary became its own country again, but its size changed a LOT. Imagine if your playground suddenly became much smaller!

Hungary lost a lot of its land to countries like Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. This meant many people who spoke Hungarian suddenly lived in different countries. It was a big change for everyone involved.

Why Did This Happen?

The leaders of the winning countries wanted to make sure that new countries could be formed. They believed that people who spoke the same language should have their own countries. This idea was called 'self-determination'.

So, they decided to redraw the map to give different groups of people their own land. However, this also meant that many Hungarians ended up living as minorities in other countries, which made them sad.

A Treaty That Still Matters

Even though the Treaty of Trianon was signed a long, long time ago, it's still remembered today. It created the borders that Hungary mostly has now. It also meant Hungary's army had to be much smaller. The treaty is a reminder of how big wars can change the world and the lives of many people. It shows how important maps and borders are!
