Who Was This Cool Guy?

Imagine a man named Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, but everyone called him Tiradentes! That means 'tooth-puller' because he used to be a dentist. He lived a long, long time ago in Brazil, when Brazil was ruled by a country far away called Portugal.

Tiradentes was a leader in a secret group that wanted Brazil to be its own country, free from Portugal's rules. He was a very important person in this big dream!

The Secret Plan for Freedom!

Tiradentes and his friends had a super secret plan. They wanted Brazil to be a republic, which means the people would choose their leaders, not a king or queen from another country. They met in secret to talk about their ideas. It was like a secret club with a very big goal: to make Brazil a brand new, independent country! They hoped to start a new government all by themselves.

Uh Oh, The Plan Was Found!

But, secrets are hard to keep! Someone found out about Tiradentes's secret plan. The people in charge, who were from Portugal, were not happy at all. They caught Tiradentes and his friends. Even though he was a hero to many, he was punished very harshly. He was arrested, and sadly, he was publicly hanged. It was a very sad ending for a man who wanted so much for his country.

A Hero Remembered!

Even though Tiradentes's plan didn't work out right away, people remembered his bravery. After Brazil became its own country, they made him a national hero! It's like he's a superhero of Brazil's history. Today, he is honored and remembered as someone who fought for freedom. He is even the special hero for the Military Police in Brazil, who help keep people safe.
